Sandwood Surf

I visited Sandwood back in May, whilst hiking the Cape Wrath Trail, but had no rod with me 🙁 This time I was better armed 🙂 although peak holiday season ain’t my favourite time of year.

I took the easy way to the bay, along the path from Blairmore and sighted Sandwood after 90 minutes or so.

A couple more miles along the beach and over some hills brought me to my usual camping spot. This lies high above the northern end of the beach and has fabulous views across the coast. The surf can be noisy but it’s only real downside is that the water supply dries up at times.

I fished a few hours in the afternoon but only interested some small sea trout. Checking my records I realise that all the (small) bass I’ve caught have been in May or early June. Perhaps I should take that hint for next year!

Maybe it was the heat, or possibly not enough to drink, but I was really knackered by late afternoon. My plan to fish the local lochs in the evening changed to an extended snooze and a leisurely dinner.

More Sun

Next morning started cloudy and still, so I cowered in my tent and avoided the early morning midges. Happily, the sun and breeze picked up within an hour so it was safe for this wuss to grab a coffee and head back to the beach.

Slightly different tides this morning, but otherwise a rerun of the previous day. Just small finnock sized sea trout and nothing biting on my crab baits.

I gave up in the end and simply savoured my surroundings instead, enjoying another coffee as I watched the surf.

Around lunchtime the tide retreated enough to let me take the easy way back to the main bay. Normally I sweat my way over the coastal hills but low tide allowed me an easy stroll along the beach instead 🙂
