Life Returns…

Mid-May usually signals lift off for codling along the east coast so I wasn’t surprised to hear Ian was catching quite well. Sunday saw me turn up dutifully at St. Andrews, armed with a shiny new Daiwa rod as well as my usual scruffy gear.

We squeezed through the tiny gap in the harbour channel left by an ever growing sandbank and headed out to sea. The wind was light but there was still a slight lift in the sea due to recent northerlies.

First drop and codling were throwing themselves at us, together with the odd coalfish. Definitely quantity rather than quality but there was action aplenty, both drifting slowly and at anchor.

Definitely a day for codling, but Ian winkled out a pouting and several small pollack. Most of them took mackerel baited muppets and hokkai style lures but they were also happy to swallow both leadhead and hard lures.

Nothing big, but we had something like 75-80 codling and a sprinking of other species. I kept 4 for the freezer and the rest went back to put a bit more meat on! Coffee and bacon rolls back at the harbour cafe finished the day off nicely 🙂
