East Coast Double

Better news to report as we spill into early June (I’m still a long way behind with these reports!). Both sunshine and fish off St. Andrews, including the first east coast double I’ve seen for a good while 🙂

A couple of drifts for mackerel produced nothing, although it’s still quite early for them. Moving onto harder ground we started connecting with a few fish, including this fine wrasse for Ian.

Fish were around, although not in massive numbers. Ian picked up a codling/pollack pair on hokkais but most fish were solo.

The fish below looks like a pollack but is actually a fine pouting – relatively rare in these parts.

Both lures and bottom baits proved successful, although the catch quality was average at best. At least until Ian hooked into something a good bit better…

A few anxious minutes passed before a lovely cod was safely netted and taken aboard. Lure caught on light gear and shallow water – it gave a good account of itself.

At 10|12|0 it’s the biggest cod I’ve seen for ages and the first east coast double I’ve seen for a good while.

A few photos later and it was safely returned to take its chances with the seals 🙂

The cod was the highlight of our day, although we’d a decent session regardless. It’s also nice to sit outside afterwards at the harbour cafe without needing Arctic gear!!
