Around mid January, I ventured onto the North Sea for the first time in 2025, fishing from Ian’s Raider off St. Andrews. We both caught fish alright, but Ian properly cuffed me with the 3 best cod. He topped out at around 6lbs whilst I’d have struggled to make 2lbs with mine. Happily, they’re now residing in my freezer rather than his 🙂

To be honest, the real highlight of a chilly winters day was Ian’s production of a proper bacon roll 🙂 It’s only taken something like two decades to get acceptable catering on board! I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for the next one 🙂 🙂

Codling was our main target but there were masses of small coalies showing on the sonar too. We both had a very small pollack and Ian added a pouting to bring us up to 4 species for the day.

So hardly our best outing but a decent day out at a fairly hard time of year. It didn’t even take me that long to defrost on my way home 🙂
